While we understand new parrot owners wanting to experience hand feeding & weaning chicks themselves, we urge that if you intend on doing this to thoroughly research hand rearing the chick, sufficient info on the chicks care & have the full support of your breeder should you need them for anything.
While this forum does not approve of new parrot owners hand rearing without experience, we will not turn you away if you have rearing & weaning problems with the chick.
We are seeing too many unweaned chicks going to inexperienced hands & this is causing a great deal of distress to the owner & the chick due to being ill informed by the breeder or not gathering the information you need before attempting to hand rear & wean. It is up to you as the new owner to understand what is needed & what you’re doing when weaning chicks. As often as people may say hand rearing & weaning is easy, this is not always the case & many new owners fall into a trap & end up with many problems with the chick. It is not ok to want a chick as young as possible just so it can bond to you. An older weaned chick will bond just as easily. A younger chick is more likely to develop behaviours due to lack of knowledge on the new chick owners part. It is up to you as the new owner to do your research on the chick you’re buying, background of the chick & parents, sufficient breeder information, emergency numbers such as your avian vet & breeder & full support from your breeder. Not all chicks are easy to rear & wean & the eclectus parrot is one of the most difficult. Even the most experienced breeder/rearer can have rearing & weaning problems.
If you’re considering rearing & weaning a chick yourself please take some time to read through these pages for more information on rearing & chick problems before proceeding to the forum.
