Spirulina is a great supplement for humans & is often used for parrots as well. Spirulina is sometimes known as the super food for parrots & is usually already added to pellets.
Spirulina is an algae & contains large concentrations of nutrients & for this reason alone it should not be used for Eclectus Parrots.
Eclectus Parrots do very poorly when given extra vitamin/mineral supplements in their diet. These birds cope extremely well on natural vitamins & minerals in everyday healthy human foods. They are unable to remove any excess vitamin & minerals when offered as a supplement. They are able to remove any excess vitamins & minerals if they have come in the form of natural foods like sprouts or fruit & veg.
Spirulina is not a recommended supplement for Eclectus Parrots. Although some Eclectus owners have been heard to offer their Eclectus the supplement, there have also been many reports that Spirulina has caused screaming & aggression in Eclectus Parrots.
If you offer your Eclectus pellets as a part of their diets, read the ingredients as some pellets do contain Spirulina.
If you choose to offer Spirulina to your Eclectus please seek the advise of avian vets, make sure it is in only very small amounts & monitor your Eclectus while on this.
