Spirulina is a great supplement for humans and is often used for parrots as well. Spirulina is sometimes known as the super food for parrots and is usually already added to pellets.

Spirulina is an algae and contains large concentrations of nutrients and for this reason alone it should not be used for Eclectus Parrots.

Eclectus Parrots have been known to do very poorly when given extra vitamin / mineral supplements in their diet. These birds cope extremely well on natural vitamins and minerals in everyday healthy human foods. They are unable to remove any excess vitamin and minerals when offered as a supplement. They are able to remove any excess vitamins and minerals if they have come in the form of natural foods like sprouts or fruit and veg.

Spirulina is not a recommended supplement for Eclectus Parrots. Although some Eclectus owners have been heard to offer their Eclectus the supplement, there have also been many reports that Spirulina has caused screaming and aggression in Eclectus Parrots.

If you offer your Eclectus pellets as a part of their diets, read the ingredients as some pellets do contain Spirulina.

If you choose to offer Spirulina to your Eclectus please seek the advise of avian vets, make sure it is in only very small amounts and monitor your Eclectus while on this.
